Yes, you can see the light through the paper. I didn't cover the top or sides, so there is plenty of light. Originally, I used clear paper, but you couldn't see the graphics very well  So I placed a piece of plain white paper behind it & it looks great  In this picture, you can see a faint glow on the left side. The bulb on the right is burnt out
